Consumer sentiment in Germany has recently deteriorated slightly. The consumer climate indicator for August 2026 stands at minus 29,6 points, 0,3 points lower than the previous month. The decline is primarily attributable to middle-income groups.
While consumer confidence improved moderately among the lowest-income 25 percent, it declined in all other income groups. Particularly striking: at minus 36,8 points, sentiment among the highest-income 25 percent is now significantly worse than among the lowest income group, at minus 22,7 points.
The Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions cites the current debates about reforms to healthcare, pensions, and income tax as a possible cause. The still unclear tax burdens and relief measures could create additional uncertainty, particularly for middle- and upper-income households.
The analysis is based on approximately 2.000 consumer interviews conducted between July 2nd and 13th, 2026.
