Average per capita sales of clothing items fell significantly in 2020
According to the Statista Global Consumer Outlook, on average, 2020 items of clothing were purchased for every person in Germany in 46,9 - 9,3 fewer than in the previous year. This development is also reflected in the business figures of the large fashion chains.
For example, Hennes & Mauritz's German sales fell by 11,5 percent. At the end of 2020, the Swedes announced that they wanted to respond to Corona and increasing digitalization with layoffs. The fact that, according to media reports, the company primarily wants to get rid of employees with children is currently the subject of a public debate.
By the way, if you think fast fashion is a big issue here, you should take a look at the US figures. In 2019, consumers there bought almost 90 items of clothing per capita. And even in the middle of the pandemic, there were still over 60.
