Sporting goods manufacturer copied traditional leather sandals from Mexico
The Herzogenaurach-based sportswear manufacturer Adidas is under fire following accusations of cultural appropriation. The reason is the Oaxaca Slip On model, which US designer Willy Chavarria designed in collaboration with Adidas. The sandal bears the name of a Mexican state and bears clear parallels to the traditional leather "Huarache" sandals, which are made in the Oaxaca region.
The design was created without the involvement or consent of local artisans from the community of Villa Hidalgo Yalalag. The model was produced in China. Representatives of the Mexican government and the Oaxaca region criticized the exploitation of cultural heritage for commercial purposes without acknowledgment of its origins or community involvement.
Both Chavarria and Adidas have since publicly expressed regret. Chavarria stated that the design lacked the respect and collaborative approach the community deserved. According to media reports, Adidas has contacted the authorities in Oaxaca and indicated its willingness to negotiate compensation. The Mexican Minister of Culture also called for a sales ban on the model and a dialogue process with the affected community.
The case is one of a series of similar disputes in which fashion companies have been criticized for using indigenous designs without permission.
