The fashion brand's business operations continue.

The fashion brand Adenauer & Co. has initiated insolvency proceedings under self-administration. The Düsseldorf District Court opened the proceedings for the companies of the group on August 1, 2026. Business operations in the company's own stores and at its franchise partners are to continue in principle during the restructuring.

The management filed for self-administration on May 15th. The company intends to use this process to adjust its cost and location structure and restructure its finances. According to current plans, the main restructuring measures are to be implemented by October 2026.

Production downtime puts a strain on companies

Adenauer & Co. cites several reasons for its economic difficulties, including the shutdown of a production facility in Turkey, necessary capacity adjustments, and general inflation. Company founder Andreas Adenauer also told the business magazine "WirtschaftsWoche" that funds had been embezzled during the company's operations in Turkey. The resulting damage is estimated to be in the mid-single-digit millions. These are currently only allegations made by the company.

The wages and salaries of the more than 100 direct employees were secured through insolvency benefits until the end of July. The management remains in office during the self-administration proceedings. They are being supported by restructuring experts Franz Zilkens and Thomas Ellrich from the law firm Voigt Salus. The court appointed Holger Rhode from the law firm Görg as insolvency administrator.

Not all stores are likely to survive the restructuring. Adenauer & Co. had already closed branches in Dresden and Bonn before the insolvency proceedings began. According to restructuring consultants, further closures are possible. At the same time, interim solutions are being negotiated with the largest franchise partner. Media reports also indicate that several investor groups have expressed interest in acquiring a stake.

Adenauer & Co. was founded in 2011 by Andreas Adenauer, the grandson of Germany's first Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, and specializes in high-end leisurewear with a maritime theme. Its retail network comprises approximately 59 stores in Germany, Austria, and Spain, including numerous locations on the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts as well as on German holiday islands.
